OUR STORY

A Decisive Start: The Founding

In the early 1950s, Macau’s economy was in ruins, and its residents lived in poverty. Witnessing a growing number of out-of-school children while serving the underprivileged, two Jesuit priests—Father Luigi Minella, S.J. and Father Luis Ruiz Suarez, S.J.—resolved to establish a school for the common people. With the generous support of Bishop de Gouveia, who lent the diocese’s serene and elegant mansion in Sai Van as the campus, Colégio Mateus Ricci was founded in the autumn of 1955. Inspired by Father Matteo Ricci’s respect for local culture and the Jesuit spirit of compassion, the school embraced “education for all without discrimination” as its mission. Guided by the motto “Striving to learn diligently with a compassionate heart”, it dedicated itself to nurturing youth “well-rounded in character and intellect.”

1957–1960

Dedication to Love: Holistic Development

The first principal, Father German Alonso, S.J., was succeeded the following year by Father Francisco Rodrigues as acting principal. In 1957, Father Jacques de Leffe, S.J. took the helm, creating opportunities for underprivileged children and working adults seeking part-time studies. The school expanded to include junior secondary education and a night school offering primary Chinese courses, English classes (beginner to advanced), and typing training. In 1958, Father Luigi Minella, S.J. introduced extracurricular piano and instrumental training, believing music would help students appreciate truth, goodness, and beauty. By 1959, the campus was extended with a primary school annex west of the main building. Yet, as enrollment surged, the facilities became inadequate. In 1960, a three-story campus was constructed in the Bom Jesus district.

1962

Flourishing and Expanding: Strategic Growth

Father Edouard Laflèche, S.J. became principal in 1962, overseeing the addition of senior secondary and night school programs, transforming the college into a full-fledged secondary school. Renowned for its excellent faculty and outstanding student achievements, the school won deep trust from parents and the community. At its peak, combined day and night enrollment approached 2,000 students. Later, as societal needs evolved, English courses and typing classes were phased out, and the night school closed in the late 1970s. Thereafter, the college refocused entirely on its founding vision.

1966–1988

Harmony with Nature: Body and Mind

In 1966, Father Rafael Diez Escanciano, S.J. succeeded as principal, upholding the school’s founding spirit. That year, the government granted the school a plot of land on Cheoc Van Beach. Recognizing the beauty of creation, Father Luigi Minella, S.J. and Father Luis Ruiz Suarez, S.J.—with the help of benefactors—built a stone cottage to promote youth wellness. Through their tireless efforts, the area was developed with a football field, swimming pool, barbecue facilities, and landscaped grounds, creating a space for student activities. In 1988, an Italian priest donated a large statue of the Virgin Mary, erected on the college’s hillside villa facing the sea. Named “Mother of the Star of the Sea” for guiding sailors like a star, it became a focal point for annual summer student camps.

1977–1982

Adapting to the Times: Meeting New Needs

Father Henry Chow, S.J. became principal in 1977, expanding classes and admitting girls to Form 1 in 1978. Father Joseph M. Mallin, S.J. succeeded him in 1979. Under Father Sean C. Coghlan, S.J. (1981) and later Father António Tam, S.J.—who concurrently served as principal of Escola Estrela do Mar (1982)—the curriculum evolved to include Portuguese, accounting, and computer science. Senior secondary students were streamed into arts and science tracks.

1989–2015

Sustained Progress: A Global Vision

Father Luís Manuel Fernandes Sequeira, S.J. led from 1989 to August 2015, championing holistic education and enriching resources. In 1999, the secondary and upper primary sections moved to the Ruins of St. Paul (São Paulo Campus); in 2010, kindergarten and lower primary sections relocated to Praça de Luís de Camões (Santo António Campus). Co-curricular activities flourished, unlocking student potential. Recent years saw international exchanges with Jesuit schools worldwide.

2015–

Diversity and Convergence: Envisioning Tomorrow

In September 2015, coinciding with its 60th anniversary, the Jesuits appointed Ms. Irene Cheung Wai Ling as principal. She integrated resources across campuses, upgraded facilities, and created safer learning environments. To prepare students for future challenges, the kindergarten introduced “Genius Brain Potential” programs, while primary and secondary levels emphasized Ignatian spirituality, discernment, spiritual conversation, brain-based teaching, interdisciplinary curricula, self-directed learning, and spiritual education. Drawing on diverse resources, the college nurtures students’ holistic growth—body, mind, and spirit.
